Systems Thinking

See the connections, not just the parts.

What it is

Systems Thinking is the practice of understanding an organisation as a network of interdependent parts — where causes and effects are separated in time and space, and where optimising one part can quietly damage the whole.

Why it matters

Most persistent business problems are systemic: the same issue returns because its root cause lives elsewhere in the system. Leaders who think in systems stop treating symptoms and start changing structures — incentives, flows, feedback loops — that produce the symptoms.

When to use it

Use it for recurring problems, cross-functional friction, unintended consequences of well-meant policies, performance that improves locally while the enterprise suffers, and any transformation effort.

How it works

  1. Define the problem and the boundary of the system that produces it.
  2. Map the key actors, flows and incentives involved.
  3. Identify feedback loops: what reinforces the problem, what counteracts it.
  4. Find the delay: where cause and effect are separated in time.
  5. Intervene at the structure — incentives, information, process — not the symptom.

Business application

Systems Thinking informs organisation design, sales and operations alignment, customer experience, incentive structures and transformation programmes — anywhere a local fix keeps creating a global problem.

Example

A company rewards sales on volume and operations on cost. Sales discounts heavily; operations absorbs the complexity; margin falls and each function blames the other. The fix is structural: a shared margin-based incentive. The 'people problem' was a system design.

Exercise

Practice

Pick a problem your organisation has 'solved' more than twice. Map who touches it, what each party is rewarded for, and where the consequences of each action land. The recurrence almost always lives in the incentives, not the people.
